Skylarking is the ninth studio album by the English rock band XTC, released on 27 October 1986. Skylarking is a loose concept album centered around various cycles in life, such as the seasons, days, and years. Skylarking Q&A. Produced By Todd Rundgren. Producers Todd Rundgren. Writers Andy Partridge & Colin Moulding.

Combining the charming pastoral feel of Mummer with the classicist English pop of The Big Express, XTC expand their signature sound by enhancing their intelligently melodic pop with graceful, lyrical arrangements and sweeping, detailed instrumentation. Rundgren may have devised the sequencing, helping the record feel like a song cycle even if it doesn't play like one, but what really impresses is the consistency and depth of Andy Partridge's and Colin Moulding's songs.

Field music: Swindoners’ pastoral epiphany, finally as nature intende. ever in quite the right place at the right time, XTC might have only ever delivered near-misses, had a miserable experience not thrown up a definitive recording. As Partridge acknowledged, Skylarking may be the only XTC album where Moulding and he seemed to be on a genuine musical par. Regarded by Virgin as the band’s best bet in commercial terms, Moulding’s writing never had the undercurrent of mania, or the excitable twists of Partridge’s, but his weirdly inconsequential non-songwriting – simple, guileless, uncluttered – hits a lifetime-peak here.

European release, printed in Western Germany non-embossed cover Issued with printed inner sleeve. For European version with UK cat V 2399 on rear cover see here: XTC - Skylarking. Matrix, Runout (Runout A-side, stamped): DM 207905 A-2/10-86.

Listen free to XTC – Skylarking (Summer's Cauldron, Grass and more). This album has a very "Beatlesque" feel to it. Often cited as XTC's best album. Initially released with "Mermaid Smiled" in the UK, but then new pressings had "Dear God" added after it became a minor hit on alternative charts Despite all that in November 22, 2010 Ape Records re-issued Skylarking on remastered 45RPM vinyl covered in the original artwor. iscover more music, concerts, videos, and pictures with the largest catalogue online at Last.

It may also stand as their like in quality. Skylarking occurs somewhere in the middle of the band’s twelve-album sequence. They released 5 studio albums with a consistent lineup before er Andy Partridge fell victim to debilitating stage fright, which led the band to retire from touring and station themselves in the studio, after which drummer Terry Chambers withdrew his membership. There was a palpable evolution and maturation in XTC’s sound that could be traced to Chamber’s secession, though he had no hand in the songwriting.
