Sucking the 70’s – Back in the Saddle is a follow-up album to the 2002 compilation Sucking the 70's. It was released in 2006 by Small Stone Records. Like the original, it features stoner rock bands covering songs from the 1970s. Are You Ready" - Sasquatch (originally performed by Grand Funk Railroad). Crazy Horses" - Puny Human (originally performed by The Osmonds). Red Hot Mama" - Clutch & Five Horse Johnson (originally performed by Funkadelic).

John Wetton’s tersely macho posture suits the lyrics of Richard Palmer-James, who matches the album’s opening squall with the rude awakening of, Health food faggot. Even The Night Watch skips the mawkishness of other Crimson ballads. The live tracks are mostly improvised, which is one reason Bill Bruford renamed the album Braless and Slightly Slack. But the pieces are mostly chafe-free, cropped down to spiky instrumentals that highlight the Robert Fripp-David Cross frontline of sharp guitar and under-the-breath violin and mellotron, all gnashed against Bruford’s clatterwork.

The '70s sometimes get a bad rap: Often these years are remembered as the musical era that brought us disco at its absolute gaudiest. Fortunately, Marc Bolan brought the tunes to back it up. Bang A Gong and Jeepster are the hits, and great ones at that, but spaced-out acoustic numbers like Cosmic Dancer and Planet Queen and the fuzzy blues riffs of Lean Woman Blues give the album its depth and diversity. On the first half of Physical Graffiti, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham crafted some of their most influential songs, including In My Time of Dying, Houses of the Holy and Kashmir.

Some fans chart his decline at his first album without Bernie Taupin, 1978's A Single Man; others might date it back to 1975’s Rock of the Westies. However you measure, the late '70s and '80s are a dry spell for quality John albums. With 1991’s The One, he entered into an elder-statesman phase of his recording career, even if his live shows proved him to be far from elder or statesman-like with their energy and intensity.
