Chasm (stylized as CHASM) is the 15th studio album by Ryuichi Sakamoto and was released in 2004. The album is experimental, pairing Sakamoto's piano work with ambient and glitch programming. Notably, Sakamoto's former bandmates from Yellow Magic Orchestra, Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, contribute on several songs under their own production name, Sketch Show.

Piano, Keyboards, Programmed By – Ryuichi Sakamoto. Chasm is Ryuichi with an edge; his compassion and anger at the state of the world today is palpable in this album. The tracks here, whilst bearing Ryuichi's trademark style and melody, are strongly influenced by the electronica scene. Undercooled" is a Korean rap/hip-hop outing, infused with electronic pop. MC Sniper appears to be asking people of the world to chill out at a time when tempers are getting overheated

He concurrently pursued a solo career, releasing the experimental electronic fusion album Thousand Knives (1978), and later released the pioneering album B-2 Unit (1980), which included the electro classic "Riot in Lagos". From thereon, he produced more solo records, collaborated with many international artists, and pursued a wide variety of projects, such as having composed music for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics opening ceremony. His composition "Energy Flow" (1999) was the first instrumental number-one single in Japan's Oricon charts history.

Profile: Ryuichi Sakamoto (born January 17, 1952 in Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese musician, composer and actor. Sakamoto studied at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he graduated with a BA in composition, and a Master's degree with special emphasis electronic and ethnic music. He released his first solo album in 1978 but came to fame as a member of Japanese synth-rock outfit Yellow Magic Orchestra with co-founders Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi. He collaborated with David Sylvian on a number of singles and most of Sylvian's albums.
