Notes

Released with "Emi Records Ltd...." mentioned on matt labels.

All the first press and promotional copies of the first UK singles "11 O'clock Tick Tock" (05/1980), "A Day Without Me" (08/1980) and "I Will Follow" (10/80) have the rim text on bottom labels that start with "Emi Records Ltd.".
This text was changed to "All Rights of the Producer..." later, supposedly in 1981.
For the above reasons, UK copies of "Boy" with rim text on labels that start with "Emi Records Ltd." are the earliest.

The cover is matt and the heavy cardboard inner, with lyric and pic, has round corners.

This release has a short (approximately 30 seconds) unlisted and uncredited track at the end of the second side after "Shadows and Tall Trees.".
It is a demo of "Fire".
The track is not separated into its own band on the vinyl though it is visibly discernible.

Boy is the debut album by Irish rock band U2. It was released on 20 October 1980 by Island Records and was produced by Steve Lillywhite. Boy contains many songs from the band's 40-song catalogue at the time, including two tracks that were re-recorded from their original versions on their debut release, the EP Three. Boy was recorded from July to September 1980 at Dublin's Windmill Lane Studios, which became U2's chosen recording location during the 1980s.

Boy was voted Best Album, Best Debut Album, and Best Album Sleeve in the Hot Press Irish National Poll Results. It peaked at No. 52 on the UK album charts and No. 63 on the US album charts. In the US, it was certified platinum by the RIAA. Release Date: 20 октября, 1980. Produced By: Steve Lillywhite. What we were looking for in Boy was a sort of cinema sound, panavision - really textured and big, like a huge screen in a cinema. Going back through the early stuff, nothing really horrified me.

I wouldn't worry about U-2 selling out because I know. To listen to these youngsters coming up with those sounds and lyrics was amazing! My favourite has always been Out of Control.

Dubliners U2 started in their hometown in 1976. They began their legacy rooting their music in the political turmoil that was all around them. After having Steve Lillywhite produce their first three albums, U2 looked for a more sophisticated and experimental sound. They hired Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno to produce "The Unforgettable Fire" and "The Joshua Tree" albums, which both put them onto the charts all over the world. After the 80s ended U2 re-invented themselves once again

Boy was U2’s first commercially released full length album. The album was recorded in 1980 in Dublin. Originally U2 had approached Martin Hannett, who produced 11 O’Clock Tick Tock, to produce the Boy album as well. The album was recorded at Windmill Lane, and some songs were written and recorded in the studio, while others had been a staple of live performances for years. New versions of Out of Control, Stories for Boys, and Twilight were recorded for inclusion on the album instead of relying on earlier recorded versions released on singles. Most of the recording took place in July – September 1980.

After Boy peaked at No. 63 on the Billboard 200, producing no hit singles, the following year’s October stalled at No. 104. With 1983’s War, U2 stepped up its anthem game, while 1984’s The Unforgettable Fire established much of the sonic architecture that’s propped up subsequent works. I Will Follow Fittingly, the first song on the first U2 album is certified roof-raiser stuffed with rumbling bass, insistent guitars, glockenspiel, and lyrics written about something very specific (the mother-child bond) yet delivered in a way that anyone can sing along and insert his or her own meaning.

These are all the albums you can't leave behind (and a few that you probably can). 14. songs of innocence (2014). Here is an album that explicitly references the chaos and crisis of U2's early years without recapturing a molecule of the vibrancy that characterized early U2. Worse, first single "The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)," with its aspirational whoops, finds the band cribbing lamely from the bands who cribbed lamely from U2.
