Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe (October 20, 1890 – July 10, 1941), known professionally as Jelly Roll Morton, was an American ragtime and early jazz pianist, bandleader and composer who started his career in New Orleans, Louisiana. Widely recognized as a pivotal figure in early jazz, Morton was jazz's first arranger, proving that a genre rooted in improvisation could retain its essential spirit and characteristics when notated.

Tom Cat Blues - Joe Oliver/Jelly Roll Morton 1924 An important part in the history of jazz was the recording where Joe "King" Oliver and Jelly "Roll" Morton recorded just two sides for the Autograph label in Chicago on December 24 1924. Of these two I let you listen to the Tom Cat Blues. The flip side was the King Porter Stomp. Just over a year later Oliver would start his Dixie Syncopators and Morton his Red Hot Peppers. With his students he runs the "New Orleans Jazz Band". Joao Missali plays cornet and is a great fan of King Oliver. com/watch?v JvVnWaTHMZs Fortunately, even today, the jazz traditions are maintained.
