Kinks is the self-titled debut album by English rock band The Kinks, released in 1964. It was released with three tracks omitted as You Really Got Me in the United States. The album was re-released in 1998 in the UK on Castle Records with twelve bonus tracks. This reissue was itself reissued in 2004 on the Sanctuary label.
The Kinks’ story is a messy one, because they’ve been so many different bands: British Invasion mods, art-school jesters, Seventies stadium hounds. But over the years, Ray Davies built his legend as one of rock’s great eccentric wits, the poet laureate of England’s dead-end streets, rooting for the losers and outsiders, always feuding with his kid brother Dave on guitar. Not exactly a cozy family relationship: the Kinks had a infamous history of onstage fisticuffs. Further Listening: The Great Lost Kinks Album (1973). Impossible to find for many years, this became a koveted kollector’s item for kultists. When the band switched record companies, their old label punished them by rushing out this ragbag of unreleased treasures: the Dave ballad There Is No Life Without Love, the wistful Rosemary Rose, the proto-punk rant I’m Not Like Everybody Else.
The Kinks scored their best-charting . album with 'Low Budget,' released on July 10, 1979. The day after the album’s release, the Kinks kicked off their expansive with a show at the Bergen Community College in Paramus, . They spent the next half of the year winding their way across the country and along the way, recorded a bevy of tracks for what would make up their next release, the live record, One for the Road. The Kinks were active for over three decades between 1964 and 1996, releasing 28 regular albums in the UK (24 studio, four live), and 30 in the USA (24 studio, four live, two compilation), where the early albums were slightly different from the British albums partly due to the method that publishing royalties were calculated in the two countries, partly due to difference in popularity of the extended play format (the UK market liked it, the US market didn't, so US albums had the EP releases bundled.
