has been added to your Cart. Frederick 'Shorty' Long has always had a special place in the affections of all serious Motown collectors, although he recorded less than three dozen tracks in total in his five years with the company. His catalogue has not been too well served in the CD era, but Kent aims to rectify that with the latest release in our ongoing series of Motown projects. Shorty Long presents all the masters that were mixed to stereo by Motown's engineers in the 60s, and includes the world premiere of a very different take of his great version of the Big Bopper's Chantilly Lace, as well as many of his eternally popular hits such as Function At the Junction, Devil In The Blue Dress and. Here Come The Judge.
For a Motown artist who had a Top Ten pop hit, Shorty Long has been surprisingly unrepresented by single-artist compilations. His big smash "Here Comes the Judge" is here, of course, as are his other two best-known songs, "Devil with the Blue Dress" (covered for a hit by Mitch Ryder when combined with "Good Golly Miss Molly") and "Function at the Junction. Though his smash "Here Comes the Judge" was a fun novelty based on a slogan popularized by sketches on TV's comedy show Laugh-In, Long was a minor Motown artist, if one who sometimes had a tougher and slightly bluesier sound than most of the acts on the label's roster.
For his next album, Blow the Whistle (2006), Too Short now took advantage of the new hyphy rap music that was emerging out of his original home base in Oakland. This saw somewhat of a resurgence for Too Short as it peaked at on the Billboard 200, much better than each of his previous three releases. However, his subsequent releases, such as 2007's Get Off the Stage, have not been as successful. After 30 years of his career, Too Short stated that he plans to release his 20th and final album The Pimp Tape on November 9, 2018. Too Short runs his own record label-Up All Nite Records. Shorty the Pimp (1992). Get in Where You Fit In (1993).
