Obviously, the main focus of No. 1 Cowboy is Marty Robbins' classic gunfighter ballads and cowboy-themed songs from the '60s and '70s. Originally recorded for Columbia, these 20 tracks have a quality that can't be denied: "Red River Valley," "Streets of Laredo," "Ballad of the Alamo," and, of course, "El Paso" and "El Paso City.

Big Iron" is a country ballad written and performed by Marty Robbins, originally released as an album track on Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs in September 1959, then as a single in February 1960 with the song "Saddle Tramp" as the B-side single. Members of the Western Writers of America chose it as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time. It tells the story of an Arizona ranger's duel with an outlaw named Texas Red in the "town of Agua Fria".

Marty Robbins was the consummate balladeer. His songs puts you in the heart of the time and the action. Although I love all his music, this album quickly became my favourite from the first track. I especially love "Pride and the badge"and "ballad of a small man". bought this album 20 years ago when it was first issued and was delighted to obtain it recently on CD. All Around Cowboy is full of great songs, and includes many Robbins compositions. Marty's rich, manly voice has only gotten better over the years. All three feature horns evocative of mariachi. Though San Angelo has a storyline and a flow similar to the better-known El Paso, it has enough musical merit to stand on its own as a classic.
The double-disc set The Essential Marty Robbins: 1951-1982 effectively presents an overview of Robbins' long, prolific career, taking in nearly every style he tried out during that time. There are honky tonk and hillbilly numbers and cowboy songs, country-pop, rockabilly and Hawaiian tunes - in all, there are 50 songs, including the great majority of his big hit singles. In short, it's the perfect place to begin exploring his long, prolific and varied career, and it's a necessary addition to any country music library.
