Winchester released several albums during the 1970s. Because of his status as a draft resister, he was unable to tour in the United States, and he became recognized primarily as a songwriter. His best-known songs include "Yankee Lady", "The Brand New Tennessee Waltz", "Mississippi, You're on My Mind", "A Showman's Life", and "Biloxi". These and others have been recorded by numerous artists. That year, his song "Step by Step", from the album Let the Rough Side Drag, was used as background music for the montage that ended the first season of the television program The Wire. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 2007. Winchester continued to record and perform throughout the United States

Album Let the Rough Side Drag. Lay Down Your Burden Lyrics. It's a cold old world that we're walking through Lay down the burden of your heart But it's warm as toast walking two by two Lay down the burden of your heart. Lay down the burden of your heart I know you'll never miss it Oh, show your Daddy where it hurts And let your Daddy kiss it. It's a fine fine line between love and hate It's tough to tell the two apart But you know it's love that I offer you Lay down the burden of your heart
