Karel Ančerl was born on 11 April 1908 in the village of Tučapy near Soběslav into a family that, although very cultured, had no musical background or tradition. Without underestimating the enormous artistic debt of Václav Talich and Rafael Kubelík towards the creation of the basic aesthetic character of the Czech Philharmonic, we can safely say that Karel Ančerl was its first conductor of international repute and that he led the orchestra to masterful virtuosity and worldwide fame. Sviatoslav Richter, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Karel Ančerl. Smetana: Vltava - Dvořák: Symphony N. in E minor "From the New World".

Prokofiev also dedicated his Symphony-Concerto to him; this was premiered in 1952. Rostropovich and Dmitry Kabalevsky completed Prokofiev's Cello Concertino after the composer's death. Dmitri Shostakovich wrote both his first and second cello concertos for Rostropovich, who also gave their first performances. The programme featured Czech composer Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B minor and took place on the same day that Russia invaded Czechoslovakia to end Alexander Dubček's Prague Spring. After the performance, which had been preceded by heckling and demonstrations, the orchestra and soloist were cheered by the Proms audience. Rostropovich stood and held aloft the conductor's score. Rafael Kubelík (1983). Pierre Boulez (1985).

Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter (Russian: Святосла́в Теофи́лович Ри́хтер, tr. Sviatosláv Teofílovich Ríkhter, IPA: ; March 20 1915 – August 1, 1997) was a Soviet pianist of Russian-German origin, who is generally regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. He is known for the "depth of his interpretations, his virtuoso technique, and his vast repertoire.

As he made an overwhelming majority of his recordings for Supraphon, and since we are approaching the thirtieth anniversary of his death, this company has decided to pay a special tribute to Ančerl´s memory by a grandly conceived project of reissues of his creations, under the common heading of Ančerl Gold Series. Without in the least underestimating the immense merit of Václav Talich and Rafael Kubelík in defining the interpretive style of the Czech Philharmonic, it can be said that Karel Ančerl was the first Czech conductor to reach a truly worldwide standing, and that he carried his orchestra to sovereign virtuosity and international fame.
