Duke showcased a new Genesis - a sleek, hard, stylish trio that truly sounded like a different band from its first incarnation - but Abacab was where this new incarnation of the band came into its own. Working with producer Hugh Padgham, the group escalated the innovations of Duke, increasing the pop hooks, working them seamlessly into the artiest rock here.

Having repeatedly listened to this album for the past few days, I can certainly understand the arguments about which musical genre to label Abacab.

Collins said that Abacab was the first album where the three members of the band really talked to each other and worked as a team. The band bought a place in Surrey, England that they turned into a recording studio, which they called The Farm. This song was written in the living room of the house. On this song and the others on the album, the drums were a lot more pronounced than on previous Genesis recordings, and the keyboards far less prominent

The Abacab album turned out to be Genesis' first US Top 10 album and first Platinum seller for the band.

Abacab is the eleventh studio album by the English progressive rock band Genesis, released on 18 September 1981 in the United Kingdom by Charisma Records and 24 September 1981 in the United States by Atlantic Records. After their 1980 tour in support of their previous album, Duke (1980), the band took a break before they reconvened in 1981 to write and record a new album. Abacab is the first Genesis album recorded at The Farm, a recording studio bought by the group in Chiddingfold, Surrey.

Eventually, Genesis began replacing those more traditional older fans with new ones, as Abacab rose to No. 1 in the . and peaked at No. 7 in the . their first stateside Top 10 album. It really was time to cut with the past a bit," Mike Rutherford told CBS. "It was just time to be a bit braver.
