Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 in E major (WAB 107) is one of his best-known symphonies. It was written between 1881 and 1883 and was revised in 1885. It is dedicated to Ludwig II of Bavaria. The premiere, given under Arthur Nikisch and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in the opera house at Leipzig on 30 December 1884, brought Bruckner the greatest success he had known in his life. The symphony is sometimes referred to as the "Lyric", though the appellation is not the composer's own, and is seldom used.
Symphony No. 7 in E major, WAB 107: 4. Finale. Bewegt, doch nicht schnell. In addition, few conductors sense the architecture Jochum constructs in Symphonies 6 and 8. And since Furtwangler's death in 1954, no conductor has compared to the universal truths he projects in Symphony 5, a Jochum specialty that he recorded a half-dozen times. What else makes Jochum special? While many conductors turn Bruckner's symphonic ascensions into repetitive blather, Jochum always finds something new to say in repeating phrases - not unlike opening the drawers of a cabinet, each appearing exactly the same outside but containing something very different on the inside.

Fact No. 1: Jochum always was a marvelous Bruckner conductor, but this performance tells us nothing that we can’t hear in much better sound in any of his numerous later recordings (both official and live ), save for the fact that he played the symphony about a minute faster for each movement in 1939 than he did later on. Fact No. 2: Where differences do exist, the advantage usually lies with the later performances. Take, for example, the curious way in which he whips the first movement’s dance-like third subject into a lather and then overshoots the big brass fanfare to which it leads. But if you must have mono or believe it’s been all downhill since the late ’50s, Tahra has issued Jochum’s superb Berlin recording from 1952. ANTON BRUCKNER - Symphony No. Jochum, Eugen (conductor).
