Kamikaze Girls strive to strike a balance in finding the energy behind sadness and fear to remind the listener that sometimes it’s OK to be sad and afraid. Unfortunately, however, Sad finds itself settled in an uncomfortable disposition. It, just like most of the album, becomes uncomfortable background noise on auto-pilot. Unfortunate as it may be for a band to stumble just after getting back on its feet, as this release marks the band’s first since the departure of their guitarist, Sad is a record that simply can’t strive on what few positives it carries to its name. While it’s good to be reminded that it's OK to be sad, it's also important to be sad around the things that cheer you up and comfort you during your time of need, and in this case, Kamikaze Girls just aren’t enough.

Kamikaze Girls are a London-Leeds duo, whose inventive DIY punk sound is bonded to a deeply honest sense of songwriting. Singer Lucinda Livingstone is frank and open about her mental health issues, believing that the conversation around such problems is absolutely vital. As such, 'Sad' is both a thrilling and deeply challenging listen. At any point Kamikaze Girls can be hurling themselves into a titanic, Sleater-Kinney style riff but will always pull themselves out for a period of self-reflection. Embedded in the UK DIY underground, Kamikaze Girls will release new EP 'Sad'.

Kamikaze Girls, originally released in Japan as Shimotsuma Story–Yankee Girl & Lolita Girl (下妻物語――ヤンキーちゃんとロリータちゃん Shimotsuma n to Rorita-chan), is a 2002 light novel written by Novala Takemoto. It has been adapted into a manga and film. Kamikaze Girls centers on two students, Momoko Ryugasaki (Kyoko Fukada) and Ichigo "Ichiko" Shirayuri (Anna Tsuchiya), who are from completely different backgrounds: one is a Lolita-fashioned girl, the other, her antithesis, a Yankī.

Kamikaze Girls from Leeds, England want you to know that it’s okay to be sad. Since 2014 the Riot Grrrl duo, consisting of vocalist and guitarist Lucinda Livingstone and drummer Conor Dawson, have used music as a means to challenge attitudes and taboos surrounding mental health. Their aim has always been to show their strength and solidarity to other young people in the same position, through their vitriolic fuzz-rock and to work alongside other bands in the scene to help stamp out gender stereotypes in music for good.
