Walter Mitty is a fictional character in James Thurber's first short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", first published in The New Yorker on March 18, 1939, and in book form in My World and Welcome to It in 1942. Thurber loosely based the character, a daydreamer, on his friend Walter Mithoff. It was made into a film in 1947 starring Danny Kaye, with a remake directed by, and starring Ben Stiller released in 2013.

In real life, Walter Mitty isn't anything special. He gets bossed around by his wife a lot. He can't do simple mechanical things. Author James Thurber does a beautiful job of closely interweaving Mitty's fantasies with his real life. It's not simply a matter of jumping back and forth from reality to imagination; each fantasy is spurred by some specific sound or word or event in the real world.

The manager of the negative assets sector of Life magazine, Walter Mitty, has been working for sixteen years for the magazine and has a tedious life, not going anywhere but from his home to his job and vice-versa. I'm lovin' it. Walter Mitty: That's not it. That's McDonald's.

The story introduces Walter Mitty, an average American Male, who escapes his mundane life by resorting to elaborate fantasies. Anyone who has ever day dreamed can relate to Walter. Mitty is married to a woman who treats him more like a child than a husband. This is due to his immature tendency to escape into fantasies rather than live in the real world. Throughout the story, Walter Mitty changes very little, the only thing that changes are his daydreams.

Walter Mitty drove on toward Waterbury in silence, the roaring of the SN202 through the worst storm in twenty years of Navy flying fading in the remote, intimate airways of his mind. You’re tensed up again, said Mrs. Mitty. It’s one of your days. Walter Mitty stopped the car in front of the building where his wife went to have her hair done. Remember to get those overshoes while I’m having my hair done, she said. I don’t need overshoes, said Mitty.

To hell with the handkerchief," said Walter Mitty scornfully. He took one last drag on his cigarette and snapped it away. Mitty waits for his wife in a chair when she is at the beauty salon, and he takes care to ensure that he is sitting where she can see him, just as a mother would insist of a child. They are another layer that insulates Walter from the big, bad, harmful world that she thinks Walter can't operate in.
