Larry Levan: Live At The Paradise Garage, a recently reissued two-CD set of a Levan set from 1979, makes the case for Levan’s worth as an original turntable talent. Rhino’s new compilation Journey Into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story rectifies that. The result is the National’s widest-ranging and most surprising effort to date.

One look at Journey into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story will incite skepticism from many longtime disco collectors. How can the Warner-distributed Rhino justify a title so definitive when the compilation is so heavily weighted toward Warner-distributed material? (Levan did happen to remix and play a lot of Warner-distributed singles.

Album cover art for Journey Into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story that I created for Rhino Records (2006). Art Direction by Masaki Koike. It was fun doing this artwork using a Cintiq Wacom tablet. I did this one after I had worked on my friend Tam's Birthday Invite: ww. lickr. It was a one print run as a CD and a vinyl LP. The album is pretty good if you like dance music and disco.

But mostly it showcases the ambient abandon and steady-state serial orgasm of 12-inch singles often fashioned by Levan himself, cutting extravagrant orchestration with spare percussion and breaks he could protract to infinity if the mood was on him. Not really infinity, of course-not here, and not at the Paradise Garage either. The sun always did come up. And Levan died in 1992.

Some of these tracks were available on the previous RHINO comp, "Give your body up--Club classics & house foundations--Vol. 1-3", and the mastering of those songs was MUCH BETTER than on this comp. Too much limiting used on this one... Although that series did not have Larry's name in the title, he is mentioned in the liner notes as is the Garage and The Loft.

Shouldn't this be recorded under Larry Levan and not "Various"?

Very good overview of the most famous tracks in Larry Levan's playlist. Of course there got to be a few hundred more and one would wish this compilation was the first in a series to come. Rhino left us here with just one Volume. The only negative point here to be mentioned is the compressed loudness mastering.
