ACE Records) 30 tracks. Dion gets the back to back treatment again, this time with the original 1962 Lovers Who Wander album backed with our own 1985 compilation So Why Didn't You Do That The First Time, which is a collection of out-takes, including the first of two takes of one of the classic rock & roll songs of all time, "The Wanderer", on which Dion. can be heard to say "I can't handle these lyrics", just before he cuts what proved to be a multi-million selling record. Dion and The Belmonts were now teen idols. DiMucci wisely never underestimated the value of his songwriters. Doc Pomus was like a father to me, very much so. He really encouraged me. I miss him.

Dion went solo in 1960 (the Belmonts did some more doo wop recordings on their own), moving from doo wop to more R&B/pop-oriented tunes with great success. He handled himself with a suave, cocky ease on hits like "The Wanderer," "Runaround Sue," "Lovers Who Wander," "Ruby Baby," and "Donna the Prima Donna," which cast him as either the jilted, misunderstood youngster or the macho lover, capable of handling anything that came his way (on "The Wanderer" especially). In addition to familiar hits, there are some great covers and album cuts that are worth investigation by hardcore fans, even if it isn't as good as Ace's other two-fer, Lovers Who Wander/So Why Didn't You Do That the First Time?. Stephen Thomas Erlewine. From the working class neighborhood of the Bronx came one of the defining vocal groups of the late nineteen fifties.
Dion said of the Belmonts; "I'd give 'em sounds. I'd give 'em parts and stuff. That's what 'I Wonder Why' was about. We kind of invented this percussive rhythmic sound. If you listen to that song, everybody was doing something different. By the end of 1960, Dion had released his first solo album on Laurie, Alone with Dion, and the single "Lonely Teenager", which rose to No. 12 in the US charts. The name on his solo releases was simply "Dion". The follow up, "Movin' Man", reached No. 17 on the "Radio London" charts on Easter Sunday, March 26, 1967. My Girl The Month of May" was later covered by English artists Alan Bown in 1967, and The Bunch (featuring Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention) in April 1972.
