The UK Albums Chart is a weekly record chart based on album sales from Sunday to Saturday in the United Kingdom; during the 1990s, a total of 216 albums reached number one. Until 1 February 1994, the chart was compiled each week by Gallup – after this date, it was managed by Millward Brown, who expanded the number of sales figures sampled, and extended the use of electronic point of sale machines.
At the very start of the 1990s, The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld managed to make ambient house a perpetual "next big thing" for the rest of the decade. As fearless psychic peregrinators, Dr. Alex Paterson, Thrash, and around 20 other musicians loaded the record up with BBC Shakespeare performances and Apollo 11 recordings, then hit the spaceways, making stops in Detroit clubs, Indian dancehalls, London philharmonics, and Tibetan monasteries. It made for an album that could appeal to everyone from new age receptionists to dubheads to prog-rock pharmacists. Even in the blacklit genre of trip-hop, nothing hit the low register like the pulses of the brooding "Angel" or the choked-out, smoked-out vocals on "Risingson".
When the 1990s began, Billboard magazine published two rock charts, Album Rock Tracks and Modern Rock Tracks, and the two formats played a decidedly different set of artists with a few exceptions. Crossover between the two began to increase, however, with the rise and emergence of alternative rock such as grunge and a heavier sound that appealed to both genres.
Rolling Stone picks the 100 greatest albums of the 1990s. The Nineties as a musical era started late and ended early - kicked in by the scritchy-scratch power chords of Smells Like Teen Spirit, ushered out by the doomy piano intro of .. Hit Me Baby One More Time. Love Songs was both an arch concept album and a feast, sixty-nine tunes that explored all kinds of love: the giddy kind, the heart-crushing kind, the kind between gay cowboys. Stephin Merritt's meticulous ditties were great on paper and even better as music: cheap, catchy and packed with surprises, mixing stark punk rock with swishy Tin Pan Alley and budget girl-group sonics.
