The Von Deer Skulls are cool. It’s not only their post-doom metal sound, but also that they’ve invented a culture of their own. It’s not just the eerie sound of the bagpipe in the background. They’ll have you frozen in the headlights as their music evokes arts imagery which may even frighten you, if not just keep you intrigued. For those of you who haven’t heard a Von Deer Skull song or haven’t seen them perform live, this album does appear to be quintessential

Album Preparing to Leave. The Rest Is Silence Lyrics. I fell in love and I fell hard I'll never feel that way again I'm just too scared You took something away from me And I'll never be the same again To talk to you still feels like coming home Oh I wanted to grow old by your side. Can't I keep You You just went away Why can't I keep you The rest is silence Why can't I keep you You just went away And The rest is silence.

DEAD COWBOY CULTURETHE REST IS SILENCE(no label) CD 48mOne of those local bands that we encountered accidentally, just because we'd got a free invite to a Black Carrot concert supporting The Blessing. Dead Cowboy Culture were the opening band, and certainly a curious outfit, befitting the name, they didn't fit anywhere, with all sorts of music, from country through to punk, from psych to French weirdo indie styles, all that within a distinctive music all held together by front man Doc Scott. The twelve tracks on this debut CD cover a hell of a lot of ground, and much of it is presented in a much more polished fashion than when they are live, a much richer palette of instruments for one thing, but less of those wigged-out jazzy improv bits that they do live. Some of it is great, whereas some just grates! Some of that is saved by the pastiche edge added, a touch of The Residents I guess, although we could say there's an oddball Madness meets Pere Ubu, by way of the Paris Metro. Impossible to classify!Recently, with a new guitarist, the material has also become more instrumental, and they are pushing the envelope a little. So, maybe this debut is a taster of the promise of what is to come?Alan Freeman (Audion #56, Spring 2010)
