But Christian Kleine offers a second solution- one that actually might offer temporary respite. Kleine's Valis will definitely not answer any nagging theological doubts you have, nor supply you with a first-class ticket to paradise, but these six indie-inflected chill-out tracks are soothing enough to release you from your woes. Kleine's music is based on the principle that simple things can become complex when aggregated.

Christian Kleine (born 8 December 1974 in Lindau) is a German musician. Kleine grew up at the Bodensee and with 10 years age started to study classical trumpet. He later learned to play electric bass, drums and guitar. Influenced by new wave music, post-punk and later by electronic music, Kleine started with DJing at the age of 17. In 1995 Kleine moved to Berlin, where he produced his own electronic music. In 1997 he met radio DJ Thaddeus Herrmann and both founded the project Herrmann & Kleine

Along with Jonas Munk and Ulrich Schnauss, Christian Kleine is one of the most talented producers of the Morr Music/City Centre Offices axis of German IDM pop, and Valis sees him jumping ship from City Centre to Morr for another set of nippy electronica. While Kleine's productions are rich with ornate qualities like bright melodies, busy beats and breaks, and crystalline effects, many of them still remain subdued enough that they can drift into the background without much notice.

The duo released the album Our Noise in 2002 as well as two EPs. Kleine's solo debut album Beyond Repair was released in 2001 on the City Centre Offices label. The Valis EP followed in 2002 on Morr Music. He later collaborated with Arovane for a split EP and co-produced Arovane's second album Tides. His second full-length solo album, Real Ghosts, was released in 2004, back on City Centre Offices.

Bizarrely, Discogs has prohibited the sale of this Digipak version. The Jewel Case version is ok to sell here. Discogs staff having given no reason as to why they made this decision, other than, "Items that are blocked from sale can be blocked either due to a legal copyright request or at our discretion." If I'm not mistaken, the artist did make some comments in the submission history about having this removed from the database, but those comments are no longer in the submission history.
Like much of the Morr label, Kleine is likely lumped into the post-Boards of Canada electronic world because of his ambient keyboards, subtle hip hop beats, and use of childrens' voices as samples. While much of this scene is lifeless and unremarkable, "Valis", marketed as an EP, gets its point across fairly well by staying concise. Kleine's press release states that Kleine tries to "put a little soul into chilly electronics." For the most part, he succeeds at this goal, but "Valis" is hardly the best this genre - or Christian Kleine - has to offer.
