ROVA CHANNELING COLTRANE - ELECTRIC ASCENSION LIVE (ROGUEART, 2016) - Stef Gjissels on THE FREE JAZZ COLLECTIVE January 2016 When John Coltrane's Ascension was released in 1966, jazz critic Bill Mathieu from Downbeat wrote "This is possibly the most powerful human sound ever recorded", an apt description of Coltrane's free jazz masterpiece. The DVD offers both the concert and "Cleaning The Mirror", a documentary by John Rogers on the concept of Electric Ascension, including insightful interviews with some of the fifty musicians who have performed the piece so far : Jon Raskin, Larry Ochs, Nels Cline, Andrew Cyrille, Art Davis, Jason Kao Hwang, Eyvind Kang, Rova, Jenny Scheinman, and Elliot Sharp.

On January 7, 2016, French record label RogueArt will release Rova Channeling Coltrane featuring a DVD & Blu-ray of a five-camera live shoot of Electric Ascension from 2012 in Guelph as well as a documentary, Cleaning the Mirror, by Bay Area documentarian John Rogers telling the story of ROVA s adaptation of John Coltrane s Ascension for a 21st century ensemble. plus a brief history of Coltrane s original recording in 1965.

Their new release, "Rova Channeling Coltrane," is a three-disc set with a CD, DVD and Blu-ray of the 12-piece Orkestrova performing "Electric Ascension" at the Guelph Jazz Festival in Ontario in 2012. But to do that at each stage, we have to keep on cleaning the mirror. Rova takes that directive to heart. More than ever, this latest "Electric Ascension" distills truths and essences for an entire constellation of artists. While not for every listener, it’s an album that can surprise, amaze and gratify if given the chance.

Rova Channeling Coltrane is a duet of films on the Rova Saxophone Quartet's reincarnation of John Coltrane's Ascension, called the most vexatious work in jazz history. First, in Cleaning the Mirror, we learn the history of the project and hear from the musicians - including Nels Cline, Hamid Drake, and Rova leader Larry Ochs - about their approach to the music. Then, Electric Ascension documents in its entirety a performance of the reimagined album, giving audience members the rare opportunity to see and hear the work performed live. Michael W. Phillips J.
