Donald Eugene Gibson (April 3, 1928 – November 17, 2003) was an American songwriter and country musician. A Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, Gibson wrote such country standards as "Sweet Dreams" and "I Can't Stop Loving You", and enjoyed a string of country hits ("Oh Lonesome Me") from 1957 into the mid-1970s. Don Gibson was born in Shelby, North Carolina, into a poor working-class family, and he dropped out of school in the second grade.

Don Gibson - Oh Lonesome Me. Don Gibson performing with the Wagonmasters in the early 1970s, with Buck Trent on lead guitar. Don Gibson might or might not have been thinking of himself when he wrote his 1960 song (I’d Be) A Legend in My Time, but the title is an apt description of his own career. He was responsible for writing at least three of the most famous songs in country music history, for helping to define the sound and studio style of modern country music, and for releasing more than eighty charted records between 1956 and 1980. I consider myself a songwriter who sings rather than a singer who writes songs, Gibson has said.
