Girl in a Band: A Memoir is a 2015 autobiography written by former Sonic Youth bass guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Kim Gordon. The 288-page memoir was published on February 24, 2015 by Dey Street Books, an imprint of Harper Collins. The title draws on lyrics from the song "Sacred Trickster" on Sonic Youth's last album, The Eternal (2009): "What's it like to be a girl in a band?/ I don't quite understand.

Kim Althea Gordon, better known as Kim Gordon, has been one of the most influential women in music and visual arts. She was for more than three decades, the bass player of the noise punk band Sonic Youth. Because she was the only woman in a group renowned for musical experimentation and innovation, she attracted a lot of attention from fans and the media, but her soft and mysterious mood had never revealed who the woman behind the stage was. Among other reasons, Kim wrote her autobiography in a bitter tone. Kool references found in Girl in a band: Death Valley ’69 video for Bad Moon Rising album. Kim says the song is about how Charles Manson murdered the 1960s and its all peaceful and hippie ideology. As she herself puts it in the book

A fascinating cultural document, Girl In a Band, proves she’s so much more than that title.

Girl in a Band does fall prey to certain memoir conventions that would be better off abandoned. Try as she might, Gordon cannot find much worth saying about her parents and childhood, but she insists on including several chapters that feel little more like mile markers between youth and adulthood than significant remembrances. The exception being the torments she suffers at the hands of her schizophrenic older brother, Keller, whose treatment of her, Gordon explains, ran over me, erased me, made me feel invisible even to myself. Girl in a Band offers a brave and revealing glimpse into the more introverted side of the former Sonic Youth frontwoman. Those purely interested in the Sonic Youth angle will likely come away feeling unsatisfied.

Not just about a girl in a ban. here is plenty of talk about music in Kim Gordon‘s memoir, but its animating force is disappointment. The book opens with Sonic Youth’s final performance; in November 2011 at the SWU Music & Arts Festival in São Paulo, Brazil. By then, Gordon and her husband and bandmate Thurston Moore are estranged after 30 years together; he has been unfaithful and she reflects on a life’s work now inextricable from heartbreak. In her 1979 collection of essays, The White Album, Joan Didion noted, A place belongs forever to whoever claims it hardest, remembers it most obsessively, wrenches it from itself, shapes it, renders it, loves it so radically that he remakes it in his image. Didion was the sharp-eyed observer of cultural values and experiences in California during the 1960s and Seventies; a period, incidentally, which Kim Gordon knows very well.
