SNOWFLAKES ARE DANCING 1974 (Debussy) (11 Debussy pieces) I love the range of styles in this album, the relaxing beauty, the depth of colors. The Snowflakes album is very enjoyable; one of the few CDs that I listen to again and again. To me, SNOWFLAKES is in TOMITA's top three. The newly remastered HIGH PERFORMANCE CD from 2000 is 24/96 Audiophile Quality on any player, and adds Prelude To The Afternoon of a Faun, also by Debussy. It adds the never before released Second Arabesque (which is delightful fun as it should be), Whistle and Chime (The Art of Sound Creation), and Nauges. This QUADRAPHONIC SACD is a completely new experience. Several of the original tracks feature new and different mixes by Mr. TOMITA. Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Faun is missing, but this is a great new album!

The LP also featured the subtitle 'The Newest Sound of Debussy'. Virtuoso Electronic Performances of Debussy's Beautiful Tone Paintings by Tomita Arranged and Performed by Isao Tomita Produced by Plasma Music Inc. Cover Art: David B. Hecht Art Director: . Stelmach Liner Photo: Tomoki Sato. Isao Tomita was born in Tokyo in 1932. He studied art history at Keio University inTokyo and pursued his interest in music and electronics with private teachers.

Debussy's music is often delicate and airy, and the compositions recorded on Snowflakes (all of which were originally composed for the piano) work well with Tomita's buoyant approach. Where Mussorgsky's tone was grand and majestic, and consequently much better suited to the head-on style used by Keith Emerson in ELP's excellent version of Pictures, Tomita's lighter touch proved perhaps too flimsy for much of Mussorgsky's music. It was, however, perfect for the gentle, more fragile compositions of Debussy. He also gets playful at times, and makes his synths sound like a person (or persons) whistling, as evidenced on tracks such as "Arabesque No. 1" and "Golliwog's Cakewalk". On the LP's best numbers, though, the combination of Debussy's music and Tomita's treatment of it are exquisitely beautiful. Claire de Lune" is such a piece.
