U2 is a withdrawn EP by the experimental music and sound collage band Negativland, released in 1991. The EP and the band gained notoriety when lawyers representing Island Records, the record label of the band U2, sued over misleading artwork and the use of unauthorized sampling. Ten years later, the EP was re-released by Negativland on their own label with many bonus tracks as These Guys Are From England And Who Gives A Shit. It was presented as a bootleg from 'suspicious sounding "Seelard Records" label'. In 1995, a 270-page with a CD was published, Fair Use: The Story Of The Letter U And The Numeral 2, documenting the whole 'U2 incident' and following events in great detail.
Negativland is an American experimental music band which originated in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1970s. They took their name from a Neu! track, while their record label (Seeland Records) is named after another Neu! track. The core of the band consists of Mark Hosler, David Wills (aka "The Weatherman"), Peter Conheim and Jon Leidecker (aka "Wobbly").
Negativland is Negativland's first album, released by Seeland Records in June 1980. Each copy of the album has a different cover. This required a small run of only 15,000 copies. Unlike all other Negativland albums, this album has no titles for the songs, just numbers. This is the rarest Negativland album, next to the misprinted Dispepsi albums and the U2 . This album was recorded when Mark Hosler and Richard Lyons were in high school and at the age of 17. Track listing
